Transition to Elsewhere
I have always been fascinated by abandoned places, but that evening even I, Lena, felt uneasy. We were sitting with three friends - Michal, Zuza and Igor - on the dishevelled porch of the villa Pod Platanami, where it is said to be haunted. The wind moved the old branches and the moonlight squeezed through the hollow boards.
'Can you imagine if there was a secret here? Some hidden piece of reality? - asked Igor, pulling out his torch. Silence answered him. Each of us searched the house at a different pace, trying not to show fear. In the living room, I stopped at a large, ornate mirror. Someone had stuck an old, faded photograph of a group of people on it - among them was a girl confusingly similar to me.
Something else attracted me - an intriguing mist, swirling in the reflection, although inside the room the air was still. I moved closer. When I reached out my hand, I felt a slight chill, and my fingers dipped into the surface as if it were made of water. Was I the only one who saw the surface of the mirror ripple?
'Michael! Zuza! Come here! - I called out, and they approached cautiously.
'What is it?" asked Michal, but I didn't have to answer. Everyone now noticed a strange glow in the mirror. Before we had time to step back, a vortex swept us inside. The world blurred before our eyes and we collapsed onto the soft, silvery grass.
All around stretched a world unlike any we had ever seen: huge crystal formations hanging from the sky, trees with glass leaves, and the air vibrated with quiet whispers.
'Where are we?" whispered Zuza, looking at an ethereal figure standing on a hill nearby.
The being turned towards us and its eyes shone with a silver light. We heard its voice - not in our ears, but in our heads:
'You are in Elsewhere. Only one of you can return. The rest will stay... or forget who they really are.'
We looked at each other, and our hearts beat faster. Was what had just begun to be a test of our friendship... or of who we actually were? For the first time I was gripped by fear, but also by a strange, electrifying curiosity about what would happen next.
