Did You Know?

Through the Walls

Through the Walls
The night was quiet, as if the whole city had held its breath. Sebastian walked down the empty corridor, trying not to make any sounds. The walls of the old, dilapidated hospital surrounded him on all sides, and the cold moonlight seeped through the dirty windows. Not long ago, such a place would have inspired nothing but fear in him. Now he had to walk through it to understand what was happening to him. The seventeen-year-old still remembered the first time he had felt that strange tingling in his fingers. It had been a fortnight ago, when, on impulse, he had touched the metal doorknob - and instead of feeling the cold of the metal, he had felt a emptiness. The handle ceased to exist for a fraction of a second, and his hand penetrated it to the other side. At the time he treated it as a prediction, a fatamorgan of a tired mind. But with each passing day, as he touched objects - sometimes walls, sometimes his own dresser - it seemed to him more and more that something was wrong. That his hand, his palm, his body, could move through matter as if he were a ghost. He had no one to confide in; even his friends from class would have thought it a great joke. That's why he finally dared to come here, to the abandoned hospital, to finally confront his power - was it really happening, or was he going crazy? One reason was the message he found on his desk that morning. A piece of paper, on it just one sentence: "You're not the only one. They already know." Sebastian had no idea who could have written it. Was there someone like him? Who are "they"? As he heard footsteps approaching the corridor, his heart beat faster. He clutched at the wall, trying to catch his breath. The footsteps were getting closer - heavy, confident. Something told him to try. He closed his eyes, felt a tingling sensation throughout his body and.... Suddenly, everything around him changed. The boy heard the shrill rasp of metal, and the world around him became blurry, blurred, as if he were underwater. It lasted for one second, maybe two. When he opened his eyes, he was stuck on the other side of the wall, away from the approaching footsteps. But he was no longer alone. In front of him stood a girl - his peer, dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt, her face contorted in a strange smile. In her hand she held something that resembled a small, flickering device. - 'You've finally appeared,' she said quietly, her eyes shining with an unnatural light. - 'I've been waiting for you. We have to hurry if you don't want them to find us. There were rumbling sounds behind the wall. Sebastian felt his life had just changed forever, but he had no time to hesitate. The girl nodded in the direction of the next door, from behind which came an increasingly strong glare....
