Through the Portal over the Abyss
Martha pulled a torch from her pocket and lit up the brick wall of the cellar with it. The smell of dust was in the air and old bits of plaster and forgotten newspapers crunched underfoot. She was accompanied by Kacper, who had just picked up a round, rune-covered medallion from the floor.
- 'Look,' he said quietly. - 'These signs... I read about them in a book about ancient civilisations. They seem to be some kind of cipher.
Martha leaned over and touched one of the letters. At the same moment, a quiet click sounded and the wall in front of them began to pull apart with a deep rasp. A dark, narrow gap revealed itself, from behind which a faint purple glow came.
Kacper looked at Martha, and his eyes shone with excitement and anxiety. - Are we going in?
A moment's hesitation; then together they crossed the threshold. On the other side they found themselves on a footbridge suspended over a huge precipice. Beneath them, a dark mist rippled, glittering with silvery streaks, and in the distance, bizarre shapes loomed - mountains with sharp peaks and a city built of crystal towers.
The air smelled completely different from the world they knew: it was cold, yet infused with a sweetish note reminiscent of lavender and something unnamed. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the mist. She had sparkling eyes, as if filled with stars, and her voice echoed in the children's heads like a whisper:
- Welcome, travellers. You have crossed the gate - you have connected two worlds, but.... are you prepared to pay the price of this curiosity?
Martha and Kacper looked at each other, too surprised to take a step forward or to retreat. Just then, beneath their feet, the footbridge began to tremble, and from the depths of the abyss came a dragging, disturbing sound
