Did You Know?

The small door behind the Christmas tree

The small door behind the Christmas tree
It was Christmas Eve morning and the snow was falling silently. The kitchen smelled of gingerbread and Mum was stirring borscht. Dad was arranging the lights and the dog was tracing the cable. Zosia helped hang the chains on the Christmas tree. She looked at the top, still without a star. She counted the hours until supper and presents. Grandma handed over the gingerbread tin and smiled. At the bottom lay a golden key and a ticket. Zosia read: "For Zosia. Look for the little door." The bell on the twig suddenly rang softly. The dog raised its ears and barked once. Zosia looked around the room, her heart beating faster. She searched by the curtain, under the table and behind the cupboard. But there she found nothing yet. Then she looked behind the Christmas tree, just off the floor. She saw a small white door with a star on it. The lock was tiny, like for a sparrow. "Mummy, can you see it?" whispered Zosia quietly. "I see the star, the rest not so much," - said her mother. Zosia slid the key into the lock slowly. Something suddenly knocked on the other side.
