The riddle of the old boarding house

The riddle of the old boarding house
A fine rain was falling as Jagoda, Michal and Lena climbed the creaking, moss-covered stairs of the old boarding school. Since the school closed, the building had stood empty and – rumour had it – haunted. Stories of strange lights and sounds floated through the corridors, and everyone who had been here at night claimed to have seen something that left a mark on their imagination forever. Berry clutched the torch in her hand. ‘Are you sure this is a good idea?’ she whispered, looking at the wooden door at the end of the corridor. It looked different from the rest – it was smaller, covered in mysterious signs, and locked with an old, rusty lock. ‘After all, we’re not going to be cowards now that we’ve arrived here,’ Michal replied, though his eyes were wide with fear. Lena only nodded, pressing her old camera to her chest, ready to document everything that would happen. There was silence all around, which was broken time and again by the slamming of a wall or a quiet rustling of unknown origin. The smell of dust and old wood was in the air. Berry put her hand on the doorknob. The lock did not give way, but after a moment Lena searched the floor and, with a shout of triumph, picked up the small cast-iron key. ‘It’s too easy…,’ muttered Michal, but no one listened to him. The key fitted perfectly. The door opened with a groan, revealing a narrow, dark room. An old suitcase lay in the middle and a lamp hung above it, which – to their surprise – suddenly flared up. ‘Do you see this?’ whispered Lena, pointing at the glowing lamp. At the same moment there was a deafening clatter above their heads, and after a moment they recognised a quiet, drawn-out whisper coming from inside the suitcase. Berry looked at her friends. Something inside the suitcase had moved. ‘Shall we open it?’ she asked quietly. The door behind them slammed shut with a bang and the light flicked on. The three friends froze in stillness, feeling that the answer was waiting for them literally right in front of them, ready to change their lives forever.
