The Last Act of the Dark Night Circus
The town of Nocturne had long since quietened under the weight of the night when a huge, aged poster suddenly appeared on the gate of the old park. "Circus of the Dark Night - one performance only! Last Act! Tickets for the brave!" Soon afterwards, rumours of the extraordinary show spread through the area, attracting everyone whose everyday life had long since ceased to surprise them.
Alicia, a painting student, Sebastian, a freelance journalist, and Emil, an IT specialist with a penchant for extreme experiences, could not resist the temptation. Together, they crossed the iron gate, feeling a shiver of unease. Inside, illuminated by a thousand lanterns, the circus tent glittered as if it were floating above the ground. The place was full of adults, fascinated by the atmosphere as if from the borderline between java and dream.
At the entrance, they were greeted by a strangely dressed woman with an owl mask over her face. Her voice - velvety and penetrating - told them to leave their phones and watches behind. "Time passes differently here. Cross the threshold and you become part of the spectacle."
Inside, everything was different: circus performers floated above the ground, illusionists played with light and shadow, clowns amused but also slightly disturbed. The guests were invited to sit in a box right next to the arena. You could feel the electrifying tension in the air as the announcer - known as Maestro Lunaris - began the show.
"Tonight, dear spectators, you are in for not only a performance, but also a test of courage, perceptiveness and an ... an open mind!" - he exclaimed. The lights went out and a huge cage covered with black canvas rolled into the arena. Alicia felt Sebastian squeeze her hand. Emil, despite his brave stance, swallowed his saliva. At this point, no one was sure if the audience was just an audience or if they suddenly become actors in the play.
As the canvas slowly began to be lifted, uncertainty and excitement could be sensed among the murmur of the crowd. From inside the cage came a sound the likes of which had never been heard in a circus before....
