Did You Know?

Space game of hide and seek

Space game of hide and seek
The Explorer-5 spacecraft cut through the darkness of space in a silence that can only be heard here, far beyond Earth's orbit. Inside the cabin, Kaja, Leo and Sara leaned over, looking out the panoramic window at the twinkling stars. All three were fourteen years old, and this was their first school mission together - a prize for winning an interplanetary science competition. Everything was going according to plan until the onboard computer gave a warning signal. "Object on collision course. Change trajectory immediately." - Oh no... - Leo gripped the control panel, trying to stifle the tremor in his voice. Suddenly there was a deafening bang. The ship shook, the screens dimmed and a shudder ran through the hull. Kaja looked at Sara, who was already searching for emergency procedures on her tablet. The last thing they remembered was the dazzling light and the inertial descent to the surface of the unknown planet. They woke up among shady trees whose leaves glowed neon green. They were okay, but the Explorer-5 had disappeared. There was no trace of the crashed ship, except for tiny, glowing filings on the ground. The air had the smell of metal and ozone, and somewhere in the distance a quiet, pulsating buzz echoed. - 'That's impossible,' Sara spoke up, rubbing her eyes. - The ship couldn't just evaporate. Leo picked up a piece of the deck panel from the ground. - 'We have to find it. Without it we can't get back to base. - There was a note of determination in his voice. They walked through a maze of luminous trees, footsteps stretching in random directions. Suddenly, Kaja stopped abruptly. Ahead of them, beyond the clearance between two bent branches, there were bizarre footprints - they were too large to belong to a human, and glowed a pale blue. At the same moment, all the leaves on the trees around them began to vibrate, and a high-pitched sound pierced the air, as if the planet itself was whispering to them. - Did you hear that? - whispered Kaja, looking at her friends with wide-open eyes. A shadow emerged from behind one of the trees. A large, creaking silhouette approached slowly, reflecting the light of the neon leaves. The friends froze, not knowing whether to hide or come closer when the figure stopped right in front of them, and the light around them began to pulsate even faster....
