Did You Know?

On the roof of the world

On the roof of the world
It was not easy to convince the parents to agree to this trip. After all, who lets 17-year-olds go to the other side of the world? But Karol, Lena and Igor had the gift of persuasion - and it is well known that dreams are stronger than reason. They had one goal: to find the trail of the traveller Maciej Golas, who disappeared a decade ago and whose diary - found in an antique shop - became the key to something huge for them. The Pamir mountains greeted them with rough winds and endless blue. Charles took notes of everything in his travel notebook, Lena took puzzling photos and Igor kept asking the guide if they were sure they were going in the right direction. Since yesterday, they had been following the footsteps of the old ruby signs carved into the rocks - exactly as Golas had described in his diary. On the second night they pitched their tent in a tiny clearing, which was surrounded by soaring, silent peaks. As dusk fell, Charles gazed at the stars and thought about what might have happened to the traveller in the journal. "He felt that he was here, somewhere close. That this place hides something extraordinary." In the morning, Lena woke them up with a rough whisper: - Look, there's something there! On the steep wall opposite their encampment, under the first rays of the sun, a strange shape appeared - like a small cave carved by a man. Its entrance was covered by loosely stacked stones, between which something glittered. Igor was already pulling out his binoculars. Lena began repacking her rucksack with a quick movement. - 'Maybe that's where we'll find the answers,' whispered Karol, his voice sounding alien even to himself. Unexpectedly, they heard a deafening sound, coming from somewhere behind the ridge - like the echo of a hidden life. A tension hung in the air that they did not know how to name. They knew, however, that this was only the beginning. They did not yet realise what awaited them in this cave, who or what was hiding there - and whether they were sure they wanted to discover it.
