Night footprints in the Wolf Forest Nature Reserve

Night footprints in the Wolf Forest Nature Reserve
It was mid-July and the air in the Wolf Forest smelled of resin, moss and a touch of adventure. Among the spreading pines just outside the boundary of the reserve, they had set up camp - four friends from their biology class: Zosia, her younger brother Adam, Kuba and Lena. Their camping trip had been planned for months, and the desire to experience something truly out of the ordinary was in the air like the fog at dawn. The location seemed ideal - far from the hustle and bustle of the city, amidst patches of grass stretching to the horizon and quiet, dreamy marshes. Zosia had been fascinated by wolves since childhood, Adam loved solving puzzles, Kuba was always drawing something, and Lena - recording the sounds of the forest on her old dictaphone. After a campfire and dinner accompanied by guitar strumming, they took a short evening hike without straying too far from camp. The darkness among the trees was different from that in the city - deeper, heavier, full of murmuring shadows and mysterious noises. It seemed to Kuba that somewhere in the distance yellow eyes twinkled, Lena noted an unfamiliar, throaty voice among the murmurs. They returned to the tents, but sleep did not come easily. Then Adam, armed with a torch and a notebook, stepped outside. Almost immediately he noticed footprints leading into the forest thicket - footprints that resembled neither wolf nor deer. They were bigger and clearer, as if someone (or something) had deliberately left them, knowing that someone brave would follow them. Intrigued, Zosia and the others quietly joined Adam. They walked, holding their breath, amidst whispers among the bushes. Ahead of them, in the flickering torchlight, a strange shape appeared. A shadow stretched between the trees, and a quiet sound - between a growl and a laugh - came from the thicket. Suddenly, someone or something flashed right by their feet, leaving a disturbingly fresh footprint on the soft earth. They all held their breath as eyes appeared amidst the darkness: glittering, sharp, changing colour....
