Key to the Memory Cupboard
Lena was eleven years old and collected puzzles like buttons. After a storm, she found a brass key on the steps of the school. It was heavy, with a worn star on the head. A blue thread and a small tag were tied to the handle. On the tag someone had written in ink: Memory Wardrobe. This is how the residents referred to the old cabinet in the library.
After lessons, Lena went to the library with her cousin Olek. The retired librarian was there collecting lost things: keys, letters and gloves. The cupboard had been padlocked for years and stood in a corner. The librarian claimed that the key had gone missing during renovations.
Lena put the key on the counter and took a breath. The librarian squinted and said: "Don't open it after dark." He added more quietly: "The night makes a strange echo in things." Then the light dimmed and the clock itself jumped a minute.
Lena and Olek approached the wardrobe before it got late. The glass was frosted, as if breaths had been left on it forever. The key in Lena's hand suddenly felt surprisingly warm. "We'll just have a look," - she said, though her heart thudded like a metronome. She inserted the key into the padlock, which vibrated at the first turn. A chill blew from the wardrobe, something rustled and whispered her name.
