Did You Know?

Garage under the Silver Maple

Garage under the Silver Maple
The August rain drummed loudly against the roofs of the low cottages in the suburb of Miloszewo. Julia, a thirteen-year-old with curly hair and a constant need to explore, sat on the windowsill of her room, staring at the trickles running down the glass. She had a book in front of her, but curiosity kept pushing her gaze towards the old trees in front of the house and the rain-deserted street - life outside the window seemed more interesting than the most engaging chapter. Outside the window, right next to the garage entrance, grew a silvery maple tree. Its leaves, it seemed, glistened even in the downpour. Julia had always enjoyed the view, but something had changed that night. As another flash of lightning illuminated the town, the girl noticed something unusual. It seemed to her that the garage door swung open on its own, even though it had always been locked. Before she had time to think about what she was doing, she threw on a sweatshirt, grabbed a torch and silently slipped out of the room. Her parents were probably asleep by now, so she carefully made her way down the stairs and out to the back of the house. The cold rain greeted her with a cold kiss, but she was already feeling the adrenaline so strongly that she didn't pay attention to it. Leaping over puddles, she approached the garage. Seeing the door open, her heart began to beat faster. She felt that something unusual was about to happen. There was a faint glow coming from inside - it didn't resemble the light of a lamp, it was more like the fuzzy rays of a torch, only... blue? Julia took a few deep breaths and gently pushed open the door. Inside, she saw things that were definitely not still standing here this morning: an old suitcase covered in strange patterns, a lamp with a bunch of keys slung through a metal handle and a shelf on which yellowed sketchbooks appeared. What caught the eye most, however, was a small, glowing stone lying in the middle of the floor. The glow of the stone filled the garage with a soft, pulsating light, and bubbles floated around it, as if someone had released them from a huge bottle of washing-up liquid. Julia felt a chill, but not from the rain, but from... the very air around the stone. She took a step forward, extending her hand. The bubbles froze in motion for a moment, as if waiting for her to move. Suddenly she heard a quiet whisper. It wasn't the voice of her parents or any neighbour - it resounded right next to her ear, carried by the damp wind. - Are you ready? Julia held her breath, not knowing whether she should answer or turn and run away. But something in her already knew that it wasn't enough to just be an observer on this night....
