Echoes in Przedświt

Echoes in Przedświt
The old villa at the end of the street, overgrown with wild ivy, drowned in the soft, bluish glow of the street lamp. The clock on the tower had long since ceased to run, but there was something intangible in the air - perhaps a hint of electrifying tension, perhaps a fleeting touch of ancient history. It was Saturday, and the evening seemed boundless. Eve, Maks, Lila and Konrad crossed the threshold - four friends who were connected not only by childhood, but also by dense, not always simple emotions. Eve laughed the loudest, although her eyes escaped into the shadows every now and then. Maks was silent, giving the impression that he was constantly analysing something. Lila, charmingly confused, was lost in her feelings, and Konrad feigned the confidence he sometimes lacked. They spread out their sleeping bags and lit candles in the living room, where the furniture remembered last centuries. The words rolled slowly, somewhat clumsily like the first chords of a new melody. At one point Lila chuckled: "Let's play with honesty. Just today, just us." Everyone accepted the challenge. Questions flowed through them like a warm current: "What am I most afraid of?", "Who do I really trust?", "What am I hiding, even though I would like/want to say it?". Each confession lightened the space, each silence thickened the shadows. Their hearts trembled with fear and relief - because sometimes the hardest thing to do is to look into their own feelings. When the candles had almost burned out, a sound cut the silence - it was not the usual crackle of wood. It was a single echo, reminiscent of crying or laughing, that spread through the corridors of the villa. The four did not even manage to exchange glances; tension filled the empty space like thick smoke. Everyone felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the chill of the night. Only Eve got up to see what it was. The others looked at each other, and their breaths merged into one nervous rhythm. Should they move after her? Or was it better to stay and not discover the source of the disturbing sound? No one knew that on this night their emotions would be put to a test they had not yet known....
