Echoes among the rusty shelves

Echoes among the rusty shelves
The roof of the abandoned library was leaking and the bookcases, once full of tidy volumes, were overgrown with dust and cobwebs. Kasia looked at the dark interior through the cracked glass. There was silence all around, broken only by the sound of the wind and the distant clatter of drops. She set her rucksack down just inside the door and reached for her torch. It was supposed to be an ordinary day - and yet her instincts told her that something was about to happen. As she walked between the shelves, she could feel the old planks creaking under her feet. The deeper she went, the more distinct the quiet whispers became. At first she thought it was her imagination playing tricks on her, but after a while she heard them clearly: - Put me back, you don't belong here. She froze. The bookcases trembled, and more voices began to come from various nooks and crannies - old maps muttered puzzling co-ordinates under their breath, a globe murmured the names of lost places, a typewriter tapped out letters forming disconcerting words: WARNING, ESCAPE. Kasia leaned over the mysterious book. The pages turned of their own accord to the chapter entitled: WAKE UP. Before she had time to read even one sentence, an ominous crackling sounded throughout the room and the torchlight began to flicker. Slowly, like shadows, other objects began to emerge from the shelves - each with its own story and its own voice. One of them slid out towards the girl and hissed a word that Kasia would never have expected to hear. At the same moment, a door creaked behind her back, as if someone or something had just stepped inside....
