Cabinet of Lost Emotions

Cabinet of Lost Emotions
Kaja entered the old library after an argument with Daria. She had a stone in her stomach and a dry throat. Mr Olek from the counter handed her the key to a small room. The stairs creaked as she walked deep into the semi-darkness and the books. She didn't know if she was more ashamed or still angry. Behind the bookcase she noticed a narrow door with a crooked piece of paper. The card read: Cabinet of Lost Emotions, quiet entrance. Kaja did not know that such a study existed here. She turned the old key and looked inside breathlessly. Inside stood shelves of jars, each with a label. On the labels: Anger, Shame, Courage, Joy, Grief, Calm. The jars glowed slightly, as if they were breathing in this quiet room. Dust danced in the light, as if someone was whispering quiet footsteps to it. Kaja touched the jar marked Shame and shuddered. The memory of words she didn't want to say ran down her skin. Next to it stood a jar without a label, a larger one with a cloudy light. Something inside it moved, as if to match her thoughts. - Hello? Is someone here? - she whispered in a trembling voice. The jar rocked on its own and tapped out the rhythm of her heart. A whisper came from inside, similar to her own voice. - If you open me, I will show you where courage has disappeared. The door behind Kaja slammed shut and the light in the study dimmed. The label-free jar began to crack with a thin, silver line. Kaja raised her hand, uncertain whether to touch the light or run away.
