Between Silence and Storm
It was a warm, sultry evening in June when Lena, David, Julia and Adrian, somewhat bored by the pre-matriculation tension, slipped out of their house on the edge of town. Tucked away in the middle of an old park, where rarely anyone ventured, was a house. It had once been bustling with life, but was now overgrown with ivy and memories that the adults spoke of in whispers. Rumour about the place circulated around the school - they said that if you listened hard enough, you could hear your deepest hidden thoughts. Some people reportedly found this frightening.
Lena, always composed, didn't want to admit that she had been dreaming about the house for several weeks. David pretended to find everything funny, but even he remained silent when the creaking gate gave way under their pressure. Julia - the most sensitive of the two - squeezed Adrian's hand as they entered the shade of the tall trees. Inside, the air seemed thicker. Each step made a creaking sound that echoed off the damp walls.
As they stood in the middle of the empty living room, Julia's torch went out. It had gone dark. Lena felt her heart begin to rumble in her chest, while Adrian whispered a joke under his breath to ease the tension. Suddenly, from deep in the corridor, there was a quiet murmur - as if someone or something was moving almost silently. Julia twitched and moved away from the door.
Cool air came in from the darkness and for a split second each of them saw their reflection in the window - but what they saw was not quite them. Their emotions were there: fear, anger, sadness, joy - processed, sharpened to the limit. Each of them felt that they had to face not only the mysterious presence of the house, but above all something much more difficult - themselves.
Then an unexpected light flashed in the corner, and a voice came from the corridor that neither of them wanted to hear. But there was no turning back...
