Did You Know?

Between coffee and the moon

Between coffee and the moon
Nina lived in the attic of an old townhouse on Spruce Street. The long shadows of the historic walls and the wooden staircase creaking under her steps were an everyday occurrence she loved as much as the smell of freshly ground coffee. Every morning before class she visited the 'Morning Hera' café. The owner, Mrs Lila - a woman of indeterminate age, with a red cloud of hair and eyes sparkling like evening lanterns - always knew Nina's favourite drink before the girl had time to order it. On this November morning, everything looked ordinary, although a fog hung heavier than ever over the town. The café seemed particularly cosy, full of warm lights and the subtle scent of vanilla. Nina took a seat by the window, where an old leather-bound notebook lay on the windowsill. No one had seen it here before. For a moment, the girl hesitated whether it was appropriate to open it. However, curiosity won out. On the first page was the inscription: "When you drink coffee, be careful what you wish for - you may find it between a sip and a sigh." Nina smiled under her breath, recognising this as another eccentric joke from Ms Lila. But then she noticed that the page was suddenly starting to change in front of her eyes - the letters were shifting, forming new sentences, as if the notebook was breathing. Behind the counter, Mrs Lila watched Nina with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. The café fell silent and the candlelight flickered, reflecting an amber glow in the café's glass windows. When Nina looked at the notebook again, instead of pages, there was a map of the city - with the secret spot right next to her own townhouse marked on it. Suddenly, the café door creaked open in a gust of wind, and a stranger entered, carrying a similar leather-bound notebook under his arm. He looked at Nina as if he knew perfectly well what she had just discovered. For a split second, everyone - Nina, Mrs Lila, the stranger and a few of the regulars - held their breath, as if an unexplained mystery hung in the air thicker than the café fog. Nina felt that this was no ordinary morning. There was magic throbbing in her palms, and the city she knew so well had just unveiled to her a door to a new, incomprehensible world....
