Among the stars: Mission to Kepler-186f

Among the stars: Mission to Kepler-186f
The spaceship 'Aurora II' sailed through the endless blackness, and there was silence on its bridge, broken only by the quiet buzzing of the control panels. The emergency lighting cast blue reflections on the faces of the crew. Prominent among them were four teenagers: Lena, an astrobiology enthusiast; Mika, a programmer and tinkerer; Tom, a captain-novatus and pilot; and Amira, a communications expert. They have all been selected to participate in the Stellar Youth project, a unique scientific mission to explore the planet Kepler-186f, many light years away from Earth. They left their prolonged state of hibernation three days ago, and had been preparing for landing ever since. Every movement was deliberate, every sound full of tension. In the designated orbiting zone, Lena looked through the porthole, trying to see more than the swirling clouds and dark oceans of the planet they had only known so far from the data transmitted by the probe. - 'I'm betting this is where things will really start,' Lena muttered to Tom. - 'Just please, no space spiders,' chuckled Mika with a nervous smile. The routine checks of the ship were interrupted by a sudden signal. The quiet voice of the ship's computer rang out on board: - Unidentified electromagnetic pulse detected on the surface of Kepler-186f. Amira immediately leaned over the communications console. The screens showed an irregular, repetitive signal, resembling a binary code, but with a structure that no known algorithms could decipher. - Could this be of natural origin? - She asked, without taking her eyes off the screen. - 'I doubt it,' replied Mika, approaching her station. - Such regular sequences usually mean something ... intentional. Lena looked at the planet, which seemed much less friendly now. The crew exchanged glances in silence. They were approaching landing, and everyone was feeling the tension growing. After a short deliberation, Tom made a decision: - We are going lower. We need to check the source of the signal before we land on the surface. "Aurora II" began the manoeuvre to descend into the atmosphere. Burning dust and ion auroras illuminated the ship's hull. Then a new, distorted image appeared on one of the screens. It resembled a geometric pattern that did not match the known planetary structures. There was silence in the crew cabin. Thousands of questions were pressing to each of their lips, but none of them uttered a word. The signal grew, pulsing faster and faster as the 'Aurora II' approached the surface of Kepler-186f. Suddenly, the control systems stopped responding. The flickering of the lights, the warnings on the consoles and the shrill sound of overloading panels brought fear to the eyes of every crewman. The ship began to lose stability. Mika tried to take control of the systems, Lena tracked the atmospheric parameters, Amira tried to make contact with Earth, and Tom desperately searched for a solution among the flashing messages. At the same moment, a distinctive silhouette appeared on the external screen - something that could be neither a rock formation nor a known probe. The sea of clouds parted for a moment, revealing a regularly shaped structure, reflecting the light of Kepler. Something that did not match any previous discoveries. The ship was flying straight at it....
