A ray from Andromeda
The Eos orbital base orbited at an altitude of five hundred kilometres above the Earth, flickering with lights like a persistent beacon. From the windows of the research segment, one could see the blue glow of our planet and the aurorae crashing on the horizon. It was the last hour of quiet duty - a few more minutes and they planned to return to the living area to breathe after a day of spectral analysis.
Alicia Trzeciak, an 18-year-old scholarship student at the International Space Academy, glanced at the holographic panel where lines of code shimmered. Next to her, her best friend, Leon Hauer, was fixing his hair ties into a ponytail while trying to decipher the anomalies in the quantum detector's reception. Their younger colleague, Tamara, stared with bated breath at the results of the latest experiment - a simulation of particle formation in microgravity.
Suddenly, the display lit up with a warning flash. The system detected an energy pulse, coming from the direction of the Andromeda galaxy. This was no ordinary signal - the characteristics of the pulse did not resemble any known cosmic phenomenon. Instead of a simple graph, there was a geometric sequence of symbols, inexplicably regular.
- It's impossible... - whispered Tamara, leaning over the monitor.
- Does it look like a code? - asked Leon, already running the decryption algorithms.
Alicia squeezed Tamara's shoulder, trying to remain calm.
- If it's a message, someone must have sent it on purpose. But from such a distance? - her voice trembled with disbelief.
At the same moment, the entire research segment trembled, as if an invisible wave had passed through the station. The lights went out and new sequences of symbols began to appear on the control panel. The communication system spoke in a metallic voice, pronouncing words that did not belong to any Earth language.
The young scientists looked at each other in silence. Behind Alice's back, a hidden camera was recording everything, but this time it was no longer the data that mattered - it was the moment when the limit of human cognition had just been crossed. Would what awaited on the other side of the signal prove to be the beginning of a new chapter for humanity?
Suddenly, a crackle came from the communicator and a voice repeated the sequence, this time ... in Polish.
