Zosia's favourite jumper has a button that changes colour and moves every morning. Then one rainy night it begins to glow and roll away into something hidden under her bed.
Zosia loved her yellow jumper with the blue dots. Best of all was the shiny pink button at the collar. It was bigger than the others and flashed in the sunlight like a sweet.
Then one morning, while Mum was helping her pull it on, Zosia blinked. The pink button was gone. In its place sat a tiny green one.
Zosia stared. Mum only smoothed the sleeve and said, "Maybe it was always green."
The next morning, the button had changed again. This time it was blue. On the day after that, it turned yellow. Once, Zosia found it near her shoulder. Another time it had jumped all the way down to her belly. Once it even had little stripes.
Zosia checked the jumper before bed. She checked it again when she woke up. But every morning, the button was somewhere else, as if it had moved in the night without making a sound.
Then one rainy evening, when thunder grumbled far away, Zosia picked up the jumper to hang it neatly over her chair.
The button gave a soft pink glow.
Zosia froze.
The light grew warmer and brighter, and the button gave a tiny wobble. Then, very slowly, it rolled off the jumper and across the floor, leaving a thin shining trail behind it.
Zosia tiptoed after it, holding her breath.
The glowing line slid under her bed, where socks and lost crayons liked to hide. Zosia knelt down and peered into the dark.
The button had stopped beside something small and shiny she had never seen before.
