Basia and her kitten Mru live by a magical forest. One sunny afternoon, they find a tiny shining box under the Old Oak, and the forest suddenly feels different.
Basia loved the forest behind her house. Its paths were soft with moss, and the trees whispered when the wind slipped through their branches. Wherever she went, her kitten Mru trotted after her, batting at leaves and pouncing at beetles.
One bright afternoon, Basia stopped short beneath the Old Oak. Something silver gleamed in the roots.
She knelt down. It was a little box, no bigger than her hand, with smooth sides that caught the sunlight. Mru hopped closer at once, twitching his whiskers and circling it with quick, curious steps.
Basia touched the lid. The box gave a tiny chime, like a spoon against glass. Then the air shimmered. Pale butterflies, bright as lantern flames, drifted up around her head. The sweet smell of sugar and warm honey filled the shade beneath the tree.
From inside the box came a soft voice, clear as a bell. “Whoever opens me must be ready for a magical adventure.”
Basia held her breath. Mru sat very still, his eyes fixed on the lid. The box gave one small, waiting rattle, as if something inside had just woken up.
