The Drawer in Grandma's Kitchen

Ola and her brother Staś discover a strange drawer in Grandma's yellow kitchen. Every time they open it, something magical appears, and this time the drawer starts to ring softly.

Ola loved visiting Grandma. Her house was yellow, with blue windows, and it always smelled like pancakes, warm milk, and cinnamon. In the kitchen stood a big old cupboard with crooked handles and jars full of sweets. But Ola liked the lowest drawer best. It was heavy, it creaked, and it never seemed to stay the same for long.

That rainy afternoon, Staś padded in beside her, holding a damp sleeve and a very serious face. Rain tapped at the windows. The kitchen felt quiet and shivery.

Ola pulled the drawer open.

Inside sat a shiny red apple, bright as a little lantern.

Staś blinked. In the morning, there had only been a spoon there.

"It really is enchanted," he whispered.

Ola grinned, and together they shut the drawer again. When they opened it a second time, a sweet-smelling croissant waited inside, its sugar icing shaped into a smile. Staś reached out at once, then froze.

One tiny eye on the croissant blinked back at him.

The children stared.

Ola swallowed. "What do you think will happen if we ask for strawberry ice cream?"

They put their hands on the cool wooden handle and leaned closer. Together, they whispered their wish.

The drawer gave a soft creak.

Then, from somewhere deep inside, they heard the faintest sound of little bells...
