Whispers in the City Library

Three teenagers slip into the City Library after dark and find a dusty book that points to something hidden behind the shelves.

It was a little after nine when Lena, Igor, and Victor slipped through the side entrance of the City Library and let the door click shut behind them. After dark, the building felt different. The long corridors seemed narrower, the silence heavier, as if the books were listening.

People at school liked to invent stories about the library. Ghosts. Secret passages. Shelves that moved by themselves. Lena had never believed any of it. She came here because it was quiet, because no one asked questions, and because it was better than sitting at home pretending to do homework.

They waited near the staff room until Mrs Teresa finished her rounds. Every week she locked the main doors a few minutes after nine, and every week she left the side exit unlatched long enough for them to slip in and out without being seen. It was their secret, or at least it was supposed to be.

Tonight, though, none of them felt as relaxed as usual. Victor kept glancing over his shoulder. Igor was pretending not to be nervous, which made him look even more nervous. Lena led them straight to the history section, where the air smelled of dust and old paper, and started scanning the shelves.

Then her fingers caught on something odd.

Wedged behind a row of thick leather-bound volumes was a book so old it looked forgotten on purpose. Lena eased it free and blew off a layer of dust. The title on the cover was nearly rubbed away, but she could still make out the words: Untold Stories of the City.

"I’ve never seen this before," she whispered.

Igor stepped closer and ran a fingertip along the spine. The book shivered in her hands.

Not from the movement of the shelves. Not from the draft.

From inside it.

A pale line appeared across the leather, letters surfacing one by one as if the cover were remembering them: For the brave only.

Victor let out a tense breath. "Maybe we should open that somewhere else."

Lena was already lifting the cover.

A whisper spilled into the room, thin and cold, as if the library itself had exhaled. The overhead lights flickered. Somewhere deeper between the stacks, something shifted.

The pages inside the book began to turn on their own.

Igor leaned in, his face pale in the dim light. On the open page was a detailed drawing of the reading room exactly as it stood around them, down to the chipped desk, the ladder on wheels, the cracked globe in the corner.

And behind the shelf they had just stepped away from, the drawing showed a door.

A door none of them had ever seen.

"Is that... a map of this place?" Igor whispered.

Before anyone could answer, there was a soft clatter from the end of the corridor.

Slow. Careful. Coming closer.

Lena snapped the book shut, but it was too late. A narrow band of light had appeared behind the shelf, and something was moving in it.
