Nicholas, Ola, and Igor sneak into the old school library for a dare and uncover a hidden passage that seems to be listening back.
The old brick library at School Complex Number 5 had a way of getting into people’s heads. Some pupils swore they heard pages turning inside it during thunderstorms. Others claimed a shadow moved across the tallest bookcase even when the room was locked. Most of the school laughed at those stories, but Nicholas, Ola, and Igor had noticed that the things people dismissed were often the ones worth chasing.
That Friday evening, long after the final bell, the corridors had gone quiet and the gymnasium smelled faintly of varnish and dust. The three friends slipped out together, each of them carrying a torch. Igor also had a phone ready to record sound, because he insisted that if the library really was haunted, there should be proof. Nicholas didn’t believe in ghosts, but he liked the way the challenge made his pulse quicken. Ola said very little. She only kept looking toward the library doors as if she expected them to move on their own.
When they reached the entrance, the handle was cold enough to sting Nicholas’s fingers. The door opened with a soft groan, and the air inside pressed against them, stale and chilly, carrying the dry smell of old paper. Their torch beams slid over rows of shelves and over the high windows, where the darkness outside had already thickened into a black mirror. Somewhere deep in the room, something settled with a faint, papery rustle.
Igor crossed to the catalogue cabinet at once, muttering that old school libraries always had secrets in their records. Ola aimed her light at the back wall, where cobwebs hung in grey strands from the corners. Nicholas drifted farther in, his beam stopping on a patch of floor that sounded duller under his shoes than the rest. He knocked once with his knuckle, then again. Hollow.
“Did you hear that?” Igor whispered.
Nicholas turned. For a moment the room seemed to hold its breath. Then, from somewhere beyond the shelves, came a whisper so soft it was almost lost in the silence. Not a word they could understand, only the shape of a voice speaking very close, and very low.
Ola’s torch flickered.
At the far end of the bookcase, behind an old wardrobe that should not have fit there at all, a brick had shifted loose from the wall. Nicholas stepped closer. Another whisper slid through the room, sharper this time, and the phone in Igor’s hand gave a sudden burst of static.
Nicholas set his fingers against the brick and pushed.
It gave way with a gritty scrape, revealing a narrow opening black as a tunnel. Cold air breathed out of it, carrying a sound like slow footsteps deep inside the wall.
Then something moved behind them, and the whisper finally became words.
