When the Curtain Falls

A night circus draws a crowd, but Lena and her friends sense something off beneath the lights. When two performers vanish mid-show, curiosity turns into dread.

Rain ticked against the roof of the old suburban hall, thin and restless. Outside the entrance, a line of people pressed beneath bright lanterns and faded posters for the Lunaris Night Circus. The air smelled of wet pavement, popcorn, and sugar spun into clouds.

Lena came with Kuba, Zuza, and Marek, which made four of them, though none of them said why they had really shown up. It was supposed to be just a night out, something to break the monotony. Still, the closer they got to the doors, the more it felt as if the circus had been waiting for them.

Inside, the hall had been transformed. Light swept across the ceiling in sudden flashes, and every surface seemed to glitter or move. A trapeze artist arced through the air as if gravity had loosened its grip. An illusionist with a silver ponytail lifted a deck of cards that hovered for a breath too long above the stage. Even the clowns looked slightly wrong to Lena, their smiles stretched a little too wide, their laughter landing half a second after the joke.

Then the twins entered the ring.

They were easy to miss at first, dressed alike, moving alike, their faces calm in the way of people who already knew the outcome. Lena glanced at Marek and caught the change in him at once. He had gone rigid, his colour draining so fast it was almost obvious in the shifting light.

"You know them?" she whispered.

Marek did not answer. He only stared at the ring as if he had seen a ghost step out of the spotlight.

The act began innocently enough, with a cascade of ribbons and a curtain of smoke. Then the twins exchanged a look so quick Lena might have imagined it. The lights dipped. The audience fell silent. Someone in the back laughed nervously, and then a single shout cut through the dark.

One of the twins vanished.

For one stunned second, no one moved. Then every light in the hall went out.

When they came back, the other twin was gone too.

A low murmur rose from the crowd, sharp with confusion and fear. Lena felt Zuza's fingers close around hers. Marek was still staring at the empty ring, his face pale as paper.

"We need to find out what this is," Zuza whispered.

Lena kept looking at the spot where the twins had stood, because something about the silence there felt wrong, as if the circus had opened a door and forgotten to close it.
