The Watch in the Attic

Klaudia, Michał, and Basia find an old pocket watch in the school attic, but its hands begin to move by themselves just as something shifts in the dark.

Rain turned the old school into a shadowy maze, the kind with whispering corridors and windows blurred by streaks of water. On Friday afternoon, when the caretaker had gone downstairs and most of the building had fallen quiet, Klaudia stopped halfway to the exit and looked up toward the attic door.

"If there is anything strange in this place," she said, "it’s probably up there."

Basia groaned, though she was already smiling nervously. Michał, who had been hoping for something like this all week, immediately pulled out his phone and switched on the flashlight. The three of them climbed the narrow stairs, each step answering with a tired creak, as if the building did not like being disturbed.

The attic smelled of dust, old timber, and something faintly metallic. Moon-grey light leaked through a round window and fell across piles of broken desks, cracked suitcases, and boxes of yellowed notebooks tied with string. Cobwebs hung from the rafters like torn ribbons. In the far corner stood a tall wardrobe with one door slightly ajar.

Klaudia was the first to notice the small wooden box squeezed between two suitcases. Inside lay a pocket watch, dull with age but still beautiful, its lid engraved with a tiny pattern of leaves. Michał picked it up carefully. The watch was cold in his palm, heavier than it looked.

Then the hands moved.

Not jerked. Not slipped. They moved as if an invisible finger had touched them from inside.

Basia let out a breath she seemed to have been holding for a year. "That’s not possible," she whispered.

Klaudia leaned closer. The glass over the dial gave off a faint glimmer, and from somewhere inside the watch came a sound so quiet it might have been imagined, a soft ticking buried under the rain. Michał turned the case over, expecting to find a battery, a switch, anything that made sense. There was nothing.

The ticking stopped.

A sharp crash exploded from behind the wardrobe.

All three of them froze. Something shifted in the dark, slow and deliberate, as if it had been waiting for them to notice. Michał tightened his grip on the watch, and the hands spun once more before stopping dead at an hour they all knew - though none of them could say why it mattered.

Basia raised her phone higher.

A figure began to step out from behind the wardrobe.
