Leon and Fig notice the colours fading from the Rainbow Forest, and a strange trail leads them toward the oldest tree and a mystery hiding in the grey.
Leon lived at the edge of the Rainbow Forest, where the trees shone red, blue, yellow, and pink. Every morning he and Fig the cat would rush outside to watch the leaves flicker in the light and listen to the birds sing from branch to branch.
But one morning, Leon froze in the yard. The tree by his house was grey.
"Fig, look!" he whispered. "What happened to the colour?"
Fig's ears lifted. He stared toward the forest, and Leon followed his gaze. Tree after tree was losing its bright paint, as if someone had quietly wiped the colours away while everyone was asleep. Even the grass looked dull and tired.
Leon swallowed and took a step closer to the path. "We have to find out," he said.
So Leon and Fig hurried into the Rainbow Forest. The path winded between pale trunks and fading flowers, until they came to the oldest tree in the woods, standing under a shadowy tangle of grey branches. Leon slowed down. Something had just moved behind the trunk.
Then he saw it. A tiny shiny jar flashed once in the dark, and whoever held it was still hiding there.
