Tymek and the Magic Laces

Tymek finds a strange shoebox in his grandmother's attic and discovers that an ordinary pair of laces may hide extraordinary powers.

Tymek loved secrets. If there was a hidden drawer, a locked box, or a dusty corner nobody else bothered with, he would find it. His grandmother's attic was his favourite place in the whole house, because it was full of old trunks, cracked picture frames, and strange things that seemed to be waiting for him.

One rainy afternoon, while the rest of the family dozed in their chairs downstairs, Tymek crept up the narrow attic stairs. The air smelled of dust and old paper. Behind a stack of books leaning like they might topple at any moment, he spotted a bright, colourful shoebox he had never seen before.

On the lid, in careful handwriting, someone had written: For you who discover the truth.

Tymek's heart gave a quick jump. He lifted the lid. Inside lay a pair of shoelaces, one red and one blue, coiled neatly on a slip of paper. They looked ordinary at first glance, but when he touched the red lace, a tiny spark tingled in his fingertips. The blue one did the same.

He swallowed, then grabbed his favourite trainers and threaded the laces through the eyelets. The note in the box showed him exactly how to tie them, as if whoever left them there knew he would come.

When he pulled the last loop tight, a rush of energy shot through him. His toes left the floor. Tymek gasped and bobbed higher, rising until his shoulders were level with the attic shelves.

He stared down at his feet. He was actually floating.

Before he could even think what to do next, a floorboard creaked below him. Then another. Slow footsteps climbed the stairs. The attic door began to open, and a voice from the hallway whispered, "Tymek? So you found them at last..."

Tymek hung in the air, clutching at nothing, as the doorway widened and the shadow inside it moved.
