In an abandoned cinema, a rusted key opens a corridor that should not exist, and Marta and Piotr must decide whether to step through.
Marta and Piotr met every Wednesday on the roof of the old Room cinema, where the wind carried dust through cracked tiles and the city below blinked like a distant signal. From up there, the building looked less abandoned than asleep. It had been empty for years, yet rumours clung to it stubbornly: a hidden passage, a sealed archive, a portal to somewhere no map admitted existed. They had laughed at all of it.
Until that night.
Marta found the key under the warped bench where she always sat. It was small, rusted dark, and shaped like a maze, as if someone had forged it from a riddle. When she closed her fingers around it, a sharp tingling climbed her wrist. Piotr noticed her expression and grinned.
"If this opens a portal to another universe," he said, "I call first claim on anything valuable."
She should have laughed. Instead, she turned the key over in her palm and felt the air change, as if the roof itself had drawn a careful breath.
"Let's see what it opens," she said.
They crossed the roof in silence and descended the narrow stairs behind the stage, where the plaster peeled from the walls in long grey strips. The lock in the heavy door looked too old to work, too corroded to matter. The key slid in anyway, smooth as if it had been waiting.
The moment Marta turned it, cold light spilled through the crack, white and wet-looking, washing over their hands and the splintered wood. The smell that came with it was wrong: metal, rain, and something like ozone after a storm.
Piotr swallowed. Marta pushed the door wider.
Beyond it was a corridor neither of them had ever seen, stretching farther than the building should have allowed. At the end of it floated an oval of pale light, pulsing slowly, almost like a breathing eye. Faint sounds drifted out of it too, impossible to place at first, a blur of laughter, a cry cut short, then something that sounded disturbingly like her own name.
Piotr reached for her sleeve.
"Marta..."
The door behind them slammed shut with a force that shook the walls. The corridor deepened. The light at the far end brightened until it threw moving shadows across the ceiling, shadows that did not match their bodies.
Marta took one step forward, and the portal answered.
