In kindergarten, Tosia suddenly cannot find her smile. With Fluffy and Kuba, she begins a curious search that leads to a strange giggle under the carpet.
Every morning at kindergarten, Tosia came in with a bright grin and a head full of quick, happy thoughts. She laughed with her friends, painted rainbow pictures, and splashed through puddles even on rainy days.
But one morning, as she hung up her coat and looked around the classroom, Tosia stopped still. Her smile was gone.
She touched her cheeks. She tried to grin at Annie. Nothing. Her lips stayed stubborn and plain. A strange flutter filled her tummy, and a small sad lump rose in her throat. Was it possible to lose a smile?
Tosia hugged her plush bunny, Fluffy, a little tighter. Then Kuba came over and took her hand. “We’ll find it,” he whispered.
So they searched under the table, between the crayons, and behind the scarves in the cloakroom. Fluffy’s soft ears brushed the floor, and Tosia peered into every shadow.
Then they heard it.
A tiny giggle.
It came from the far corner, right under the big green carpet.
Tosia froze. Kuba squeezed her hand. Fluffy tilted his head as if he had heard it too.
Tosia bent down and slowly lifted the corner of the carpet....
