Through the Door Beneath the Clock

Three friends uncover a hidden door in the school basement and step into a strange world full of puzzles, floating islands, and a watchful creature with a key.

Maria Skłodowska-Curie School looked ordinary from the outside, but Zuzia, Kuba, and Lena had long suspected it was full of secrets. That Friday afternoon, when the corridors were nearly empty, they were still lingering near the biology room. Lena crouched beneath the mop cupboard and came up with a small key set with a green stone.

"Maybe it opens an old locker," Kuba said, turning it over in the light.

Zuzia wasn’t listening. At the far end of the corridor, beside the huge old clock, she had noticed a faint line in the wall. The three of them moved closer, and the line widened into a narrow wooden door the colour of wet earth. In its lock glimmered the same green stone as the key.

Lena swallowed and slid the key inside. Click.

The door opened by itself, revealing a staircase that sank into darkness and then shimmered with a pale, phosphorescent glow. "Ready?" Zuzia whispered, though her own voice sounded too loud in the silence.

They went down one step at a time. The walls were painted with unknown animals and curling symbols, and the air grew warmer, carrying a sweet, fresh scent that did not belong in any school basement.

At the bottom, the stairs simply ended.

Before them stretched a vast blue cavern where tiny islands drifted in the air and shining fish floated between them like leaves in a current. Golden mist pooled above the ground, turning everything strange and bright. On the nearest island stood a creature like a giant owl in a cloak, clutching an enormous key in one talon. It was staring straight at the children.

Then the island began to move toward them.
