Four friends discover an odd wardrobe in their school library, and when they open it, the quiet school disappears behind them.
The first rainy afternoon of the school year felt like it might never end at Singing Gopher School, on the edge of a small, windblown town.
After lessons, Emma, Oliver, Mia, and Ben hurried to the library to wait out the storm and find something better to do than stare at the wet windows. The room was warm and dim, with tall shelves, crooked chairs, and stacks of books that looked as if they had been waiting there for years. In the far corner stood an old wooden wardrobe nobody ever seemed to use.
Mia noticed it first. She stopped so suddenly that the others nearly bumped into her.
"Have you ever seen that before?" she whispered.
The wardrobe was narrow and dark, with a brass handle dulled by age. No labels. No sign. Nothing to explain why it was tucked away between a shelf of atlas books and a broken reading lamp.
Oliver frowned. "Probably full of old coats."
"Then why is it locked?" Mia asked.
It wasn't, as it turned out. The door gave a soft click when she pulled it open.
Inside, there were no coats at all. No shelves, either. Just a deep, moving darkness that seemed to breathe back at them.
Ben took one step back. "That is not normal."
Mia, though, leaned closer. A cold draft slipped past her fingers, carrying a smell like rain-soaked leaves and earth.
Before anyone could stop her, she put one foot over the threshold.
"Mia," Emma said, but it was too late.
Mia vanished into the dark.
For one stunned second, the library was silent except for the rain tapping the windows. Then Oliver grabbed the doorframe, swallowed hard, and followed her. Emma and Ben looked at each other, then at the impossible black space inside the wardrobe.
Something shifted beyond it.
Something was waiting.
