A group of students drive to an abandoned manor in Silent Valley to trace a long-buried mystery. Inside, they find the house is waiting for them, and something hidden below it has just been disturbed.
Night had fallen hard and without stars, turning the road through Silent Valley into a black ribbon cut between the trees. Marta sat rigid in the passenger seat of the old Volkswagen, watching the forest press in close on both sides. Wojtek drove with his jaw set, as if speed alone might outrun the questions that had brought them here. In the back seat, Anka and Igor bent over the photocopied pages they had pulled from a forgotten diary in the university archives, their voices low and restless.
Then the headlights caught it.
The manor rose out of the trees like a shape the forest had been trying to hide. Even in ruin, it was overwhelming. The front steps were cracked, the shutters hung loose, and the upper windows stared down at them like blind eyes. Yet there was something about the place that did not feel abandoned. It looked occupied by silence, as if the house had been holding its breath for years.
Marta swallowed. "Ready?"
No one answered with much confidence, but they got out anyway.
The front door yielded with a slow, protesting groan. Inside, the air was cold and stale, carrying the smell of dust, damp wood, and something older beneath it. Their footsteps rang through the high corridor, bouncing off walls lined with faded portraits. The faces in the frames were severe and watchful, and Marta had the uneasy feeling that they were counting them as they passed.
They split up. Marta and Wojtek climbed the stairs, while Anka and Igor searched the ground floor.
At the end of the upstairs corridor, Marta stopped. One stretch of wall looked wrong. The paint was cleaner there, the colour just a shade different from the rest, as if someone had covered something recently and done it in a hurry. She brushed her fingers along the edge of the carpet hanging beside it, and her hand met cold metal.
A hidden doorknob.
She looked at Wojtek. He didn't speak. He only nodded once, slowly, and stepped back.
Below them, a sharp click broke the silence.
Anka's voice drifted up from the library, tight with surprise. A moment later, Igor called out for her to come quickly. Marta and Wojtek ran downstairs and found them standing beside a small trunk wedged between two shelves of rotting books. The lock was marked with symbols none of them recognised, scratched deep into the brass like a warning.
When Igor touched it, the trunk answered with a hollow clatter.
Something shifted in the wall opposite them.
A seam of darkness opened where there had been no seam before, revealing a narrow passage leading down beneath the manor. Cold air breathed out of it, carrying the dry smell of old paper and something else, something faint and human, like a whisper caught in a room that had not heard one for years.
Anka stared into the darkness. "What is that?"
No one answered. The passage seemed to listen.
Then they heard it again: footsteps, slow and deliberate, moving somewhere in the corridor behind them. The front door gave a long, creaking sigh, as if someone had just come inside.
