Marta, Kuba, and Michal find a strange key beneath an abandoned bridge in Wilczogóra and realise someone else has been searching for it.
Wilczogóra always looked harmless in daylight. By dusk, though, the forest around the river seemed to close in, and every sound carried too far. Marta walked a little ahead of Kuba and Michal along the narrow path, the beam of Michal's torch shaking over roots, nettles, and wet stones.
"Have you ever heard the old bridge called the Bridge of Whispers?" Michal asked, lowering his voice as if the trees might be listening.
Marta glanced at him. "Only from the people who want to scare younger kids." But she did not sound convinced.
Kuba stopped walking for a second, listening to the river below. "My grandmother said we should stay away from it after dark," he said. "She never said why. Which made it worse."
The bridge rose out of the trees a few minutes later, half-swallowed by moss and shadow. It was old stone, cracked at the edges, with dark water moving beneath it and weeds growing in the seams. Nothing about it should have drawn them closer. And yet it did.
Marta was the first to notice the glint near the riverbank. She crouched, parted the damp grass, and froze.
"Look at this," she whispered.
Half-buried among the stones lay a small metal key, blackened with age and etched with marks so fine they looked almost deliberate. Not decoration. Writing, maybe. Or a code.
Kuba knelt beside her. "That isn't normal."
Marta picked it up carefully. The metal was colder than the river water, then, all at once, faintly warm. A sound slipped through her fingers, so quiet she almost mistook it for the wind: a whisper, thin and breathless.
Michal went still. "Did you hear that?"
Before anyone could answer, a branch snapped on the far side of the bridge.
All three turned. Between the trees, a figure stood motionless in the dark, just beyond the reach of the torchlight. The person took one slow step forward, and the moon caught a glimmer at their throat: a medallion stamped with the same mark as the key.
Marta tightened her hand around the metal, and the whisper came again, clearer this time, as the stranger stopped in front of them and said, "Where did you get that key?"
