Janek and Zosia stay late in their century-old school and uncover a hidden stairway under the art room. Below, dark corridors, shifting paintings, and a strange chamber wait in the shadows.
Janek had always felt that their school was hiding something. It was old enough for the walls to sigh in winter, and sometimes, when the corridors were empty, he could hear faint scratching from the basement, as if something small and restless were moving just out of sight.
One afternoon, after the last bell had rung and most of the school had gone quiet, Janek and Zosia stayed behind in the art room to finish a poster for the competition. Paintbrushes were drying in jars, paper scraps lay everywhere, and the sun was already slipping low behind the windows.
Then the wind hit the building with a hard bang. The door thudded shut, and the lights flickered out in one corner of the room. Zosia bent down to look for her crayons under the table, and her fingers brushed against something that should not have been there: a loose board in the floor.
They pried it up board by board, breath held tight, until a black opening appeared beneath the art room. A narrow staircase disappeared into the darkness below.
"Do you think we should go down there?" Janek whispered, trying to sound braver than he felt.
Zosia switched on her phone torch and pointed the beam into the hole. "If not us, then who?"
The steps groaned under their feet as they climbed down. The air grew colder with every step, and from somewhere below came a sound so soft Janek almost thought he had imagined it - a whisper, sliding along the stone.
At the bottom, they found a long corridor built from rough old bricks. Faded paintings hung on the walls, their painted faces turned towards the two children as if they had been waiting for them. Janek swallowed hard and reached out to steady himself against the wall.
His hand pressed against a damp brick.
With a low rumble, a section of the wall shifted inward.
Behind it was a small chamber. In the middle of the floor lay a rusty key and a notebook wrapped in cracked leather, its cover marked with strange symbols Janek had never seen before.
Then footsteps sounded somewhere deeper in the corridor.
Slow, careful footsteps.
Something was coming toward them.
