Zosia follows a hidden path into the forest and finds a tiny bridge, a whispering stream, and elves who seem to be waiting just for her.
Beyond Zosia’s village stretched a deep green forest where the children were told to stay near the edge. But one morning, with a small rucksack on her back and her favourite teddy bear tucked under her arm, Zosia slipped onto a path she had never walked before.
The trees stood close together, as if they were sharing secrets. Zosia heard soft laughter above her head and a clear, singing sound drifting through the leaves. Sunlight flickered on the ground in gold patches, and the grass beneath her feet felt warm and springy. Then, under a broad old oak tree, she stopped.
A little wooden bridge crossed a shining silver stream. On it stood tiny creatures in bright hats and curly shoes. Elves. One of them lifted a hand and beckoned.
“Come closer,” he called. “We’ve been waiting for someone brave.”
Zosia stepped forward, her heart bumping fast and light. The elves crowded around her, whispering so softly she could hardly catch the words. Then they pointed to the far end of the bridge, where a huge blue lily rose from the water like a splash of sky.
The green elf swallowed and said, “No one has ever dared to look there.”
Zosia looked at the lily. It shivered once, as if something inside it had just woken up.
