Tymek and Lena find a strange key in the forest and an overgrown gate that opens into a hidden world of whispering trees, a growing shadow, and a warning they do not understand.
Tymek almost kicked the key before he saw it glinting in the mulch, right where he and Lena always ended their walks in the forest. It was old and narrow, with a tiny leaf shaped like a tooth at the end, as if it had been made for some door that had not existed in years.
Lena crouched beside him, her eyes bright. "Come on," she whispered. "Let’s find what it opens."
They moved deeper between the trees, where the path thinned into roots and brambles and the air smelled of damp earth and crushed leaves. The forest grew quieter the farther they went, until even their footsteps seemed to listen.
Then they found it.
An iron gate stood in a clearing, half swallowed by blackberry vines and slick green moss. Tymek had never seen it before, and Grandpa had never mentioned anything like it. The key slid into the lock as if it had been waiting for him. With a rusty groan, the gate shuddered open.
Beyond it was not the forest they knew.
The sky hung in a strange grey-purple haze, and the grass reached nearly to Tymek’s knees. The trees were taller, darker, older, their leaves trembling with a sound like whispers passing from branch to branch. Lena gripped Tymek’s sleeve.
A small glowing creature drifted down from the crown of the nearest tree. Its wings were clear as glass, and its face was solemn as an old librarian’s.
"I have been waiting for you," it said, in a voice soft as wind through reeds. "You must help me. The shadow is growing stronger, and if we do not find the Nest of Whispers before the three moons set, the Land of Trees will fall silent forever."
Lena stared at it. Tymek could feel his own heart thudding too fast.
Then, from somewhere deeper in the trees, came a sound so faint he almost missed it.
Crying.
The glowing creature turned at once and pointed toward a tunnel twisting beneath the roots of the oldest tree in the clearing.
"You have only one chance," it said. "Who dares enter first?"
