Emilia and Igor return to their favourite park after dark and find the old street lamps awake, restless, and trying to tell them something neither of them is ready to hear.
Emilia had always believed the strangest things waited in ordinary places. That thought followed her into the park that evening, with Igor beside her and the city centre humming faintly beyond the trees. The plane leaves shivered overhead, but the air under them felt unnaturally still, as if the night had drawn a breath and was holding it.
They had both stayed late at work, too tired for conversation and too restless to go straight home. So they took the long way through the park, under the old street lamps they knew by heart. Tonight, though, the lamps did not feel familiar. Their light was warmer, deeper somehow, spilling over the gravel paths in bright, trembling pools that seemed to shift when Emilia looked directly at them.
She slowed. Igor did too. For a moment, their shadows did not move with them. His seemed to lag half a step behind, then slide sideways across the path. Emilia felt a small, cold prickling at the base of her neck. Before she could speak, her own shadow bent sharply toward the nearest lamp, as if listening.
Then the whisper came.
It was barely more than a breath against glass, too faint to be called a voice, yet it made Emilia stop dead. Igor caught her arm. The sound came again from the oldest lamp in the row, the one with the cracked casing and the blackened metal post. Something inside it shifted with a dry, delicate click, and a thread of words slipped through the light.
Emilia leaned in despite herself. The lamp whispered again, clearer this time, and the other lamps answered in a low, overlapping murmur that raised the fine hairs on her arms. Igor tightened his grip on her sleeve.
"Maybe we should go," he said, but his voice had gone thin.
Before Emilia could answer, every lamp in the park flared at once with a hard blue glow. The paths vanished. The trees seemed to tilt inward. And from somewhere beneath the light came a voice, many voices at once, saying, "If you want the secret of this city..."
The ground gave a slow, shuddering pulse under their feet. At the far end of the park, where there had only been darkness a moment before, something opened between the shadows, and the lamps began to lean toward it as if they expected Emilia and Igor to follow.
