The Mystery of the Red Tent

Maks and Lena discover a strange circus in a red tent, where every act feels a little too magical and a little too unsettling. Then the director points them toward the biggest secret of all.

The moment Maks spotted the huge red tent in the clearing outside town, he stopped so suddenly Lena nearly crashed into him.

"Come on," she whispered, tugging his sleeve. "The circus is starting!"

Bright balloons bobbed above the entrance, and cheerful music spilled through the grass. But something about the place made Maks uneasy. There was no ticket booth, no queue, no laughing crowd pressing forward. Only an old wooden sign leaning beside the flap of the tent: "Daredevil Circus - entry for the unafraid only."

Lena lifted her chin. "That means us."

Inside, the air smelled of popcorn and candyfloss, yet the light was too low, as if the tent were keeping its own secrets. People sat close together on the benches, speaking in hushed voices and glancing toward the ring as though they expected something to go wrong.

Then a man in a blue tailcoat stepped out of the shadows. His top hat gleamed under the spotlights. He tapped his cane once on the ground, and the whole ring exploded into colour.

Zebras with pink hats dashed in perfect circles. Butterflies rose above them and gathered into words in the air. Clowns tossed flaming torches that turned into shining glass balls before they hit the ground. A young acrobat sprang upward on wings made from real leaves, higher and higher until Maks had to tilt his head back to follow her.

The crowd gasped, but Maks barely breathed. Every trick was stranger than the last, as if the tent itself were inventing them on the spot.

Then a small cart rolled into the ring, carrying a box draped in black cloth. It rattled once.

The director’s gaze snapped straight to Maks and Lena.

"And now," he said, smiling without warmth, "it is time for the greatest secret of our circus."

The cloth slid to the floor. The box lid creaked open.

And something inside began to rise...
