The Secret Behind the Rusty Gate

Olive and Franek slip through a rusty gate into an overgrown garden where a glowing lantern, strange footprints, and shadowy sounds suggest they are not alone.

Olive had been curious about the end of Silent Street for as long as she could remember. Where the pavement broke into sand and the old No Trespassing sign hung by one rusted screw, a crooked iron gate stood between the road and the forgotten garden beyond. The adults never called it anything except “that place,” and they lowered their voices every time they passed it.

On Friday afternoon, Olive was walking home with her best friend, Franek, when the gate came into view. The wind pushed at it, and it answered with a low, squealing creak that made both of them stop.

“Maybe just a quick look,” Franek whispered, tightening his grip on the torch he always carried, even in daylight.

Olive touched the cold metal. It gave way at once, and the gate swung inward with a long, tired groan. Behind it lay a tangle of wild bushes, twisted vines, and a narrow path buried under a thick drift of yellow leaves.

They stepped inside and the street vanished behind them. The air felt damp and old, like rainwater trapped under stone. Franek suddenly froze and pointed. Half-hidden in the weeds was a lantern made of blackened brass. Before either of them could speak, it flickered to life with a pale gold glow.

“Did you do that?” Olive whispered.

Franek shook his head.

A rustle moved through the bushes. Then came a soft croak, and the sound of wings beating fast in the dark. Franek’s torch began to blink, once, twice, then wildly. Olive stared at the ground as tiny footprints appeared one after another in the leaves, circling closer and closer until a shadow shifted behind the nearest hedge.
