Anthony finds a locked chest in the attic of his old house, and a whisper in the dark turns his curiosity into an adventure he is not ready to refuse.
Anthony was twelve, and questions seemed to follow him everywhere. He asked them of clouds, of cracked pavements, of the birds that vanished into the evening sky. After school, he often sat in the armchair by the window and invented whole worlds just to see where they might lead.
That evening, while the last light slid across the kitchen table, he heard a sound that did not belong to the house. A soft creak came from above, from the attic. Anthony looked up so quickly his chair legs scraped the floor. The attic door had been locked for as long as he could remember. His parents said it was only full of dust, old boxes, and things nobody needed. Still, the sound had been real.
Later, when his mother was reading and his father was bent over the bicycle in the garage, Anthony opened his grandfather’s desk drawer and found a small, cold key tucked beneath a stack of receipts. It fit the attic lock perfectly. The metal gave a tired click, and the door opened just enough for him to slip inside.
The attic was dim and strange, breathing out the smell of dry wood and forgotten years. Moonlight spilled through a tiny window and turned the floor silver. Suitcases leaned against the walls. Books lay in crooked piles. Then Anthony saw it: a wooden chest he had never noticed before, covered in carved symbols that seemed to twist when he looked at them too long. Beside it lay a key with a curling handle, as if it had been waiting for him.
Anthony picked it up. His hands had gone cold. The key slid into the lock, turned with a whisper of metal, and the chest opened a crack. A faint blue light leaked out and brushed across his fingers.
Then a voice spoke from somewhere behind him in the dark.
"Don't open it unless you're ready for an adventure."
Anthony spun around. The attic was empty. But the chest glowed a little brighter, as if something inside had just noticed him too.
