The Lost Key of Theodore the Turtle

Theodore the turtle finds a tiny golden key in a forest glade, and with Mela and Philip he follows a trail into the deeper woods, where a strange sound waits in the shadows.

In a bright green glade beside an old oak tree lived a little turtle named Theodore. He liked warm sunlight, soft leaves, and slow walks with his two best friends: Mela the mouse, quick as a blink, and Philip the sparrow, who noticed everything from above.

One morning, while Theodore was nosing through the grass, something flashed between the blades. He stopped. He blinked. Then he gently pulled out a tiny golden key.

It was so small it could sit on Theodore’s shell, but it shone like treasure.

Mela rushed over. “A key!” she squeaked.

Philip hopped closer, tilting his head. “But what does it open?”

Theodore turned the key in his paw. It felt cold and smooth, as if it had been waiting a very long time.

The three friends looked at one another.

Then Philip pointed with one wing toward the thickest part of the forest, where the trees grew close together and the roots curled over the ground like sleeping snakes.

“Look,” he whispered.

From deep among the leaves came a soft, faint sound.

Theodore gripped the little golden key tighter and took one slow step toward the dark trees.
