Three friends uncover a hidden map in an abandoned school and follow it underground, where a sealed door begins to whisper their names.
Julka sat on the steps of the abandoned school and watched the sun sink behind the trees until the windows turned black. Beside her hovered Kuba, short and red-haired, always half a step from trouble, and Lena, who treated every rule like a dare. It was supposed to be another dull holiday afternoon. Then they found the book.
It was hidden in a warped wardrobe in the corridor, jammed behind a broken shelf as if someone had meant to come back for it and never did. Kuba flipped through the yellowed pages with trembling fingers. A map stared back at them: a staircase, an underground passage, and a door marked with a strange symbol, an eye inside a circle. Julka felt the skin on her arms tighten.
"Look at this," Kuba whispered.
They waited until dark, then slipped inside again, their footsteps swallowed by the school’s hollow corridors. The basement was colder than it should have been. The air smelled of damp stone and dust. Lena was the one who found it: a loose slab in the floor, cold beneath her palm. When they lifted it, a narrow tunnel opened under the school like a mouth.
They crawled forward, shoulders brushing rough earth, counting breaths more than steps. After a while the tunnel widened, and there it was: the door from the map, half-buried in silver dust, the same eye carved above the frame. Lena gripped the iron handle. A pulse of icy air spilled through the crack, carrying whispers so faint they were almost inside Julka’s head.
Then the door shuddered open by itself.
A thin corridor stretched beyond it, lined with dust and a bluish light that seemed to breathe. Shadows moved where nothing stood, and the whispers grew louder, breaking apart and reforming into words Julka almost recognised. The floor gave a low, uneasy tremble.
From deep inside the corridor came a voice, stretched thin and urgent.
"Help us..."
Julka turned slowly to her friends, and in that instant she knew the school was no longer empty, and whatever waited beyond the door had been waiting for them.
