Sara and David discover an old notebook in the empty library, and one drawing matches their school too closely to be an accident.
The school felt different after everyone had gone home. The halls still held the warmth of the day, but the air in the library had turned dusty and cold, with that faint, papery smell old books seemed to keep for themselves. Sara and David were searching the last row of shelves when something slipped from above and landed beside the attic door with a soft thud.
"Did you see that?" Sara whispered, already moving.
David crouched beside her and picked up the book. It was no ordinary notebook. The cover was worn smooth at the edges, and the inside pages were crowded with pencil drawings, some quick and messy, others so detailed they seemed impossible to have come from the same hand. A city floating in clouds. A door opening into blank space. Dark, faceless shapes standing at the edge of the page like they were waiting for someone.
Sara turned another page, then stopped.
On the fourth page was a drawing of their school gymnasium.
Not a sketch of it, either. The benches were in the right place. The windows matched. Even the emergency exit sign was there. But in the middle of the floor yawned a huge black hole, and pale light spilled up from below, carrying tiny glowing specks that drifted through the air as if gravity had given up.
Sara stared. "That’s the gym. It really is."
David leaned closer, his usual scepticism failing him for once. The drawing was too exact to shrug off. Too specific. "Maybe someone hid something in the attic," he said quietly. "Maybe this notebook was theirs."
The attic door stood a few steps away, half-hidden in shadow. Neither of them said it out loud, but they were already moving toward it, the notebook tight in Sara’s hands. The stairs groaned under their weight. With every step, the library below seemed to disappear, and the darkness ahead thickened like smoke.
At the top, David pushed the door open.
A flicker of light flashed somewhere inside the attic. Sara froze. Then, from deep below the floorboards, they heard it again: a whisper, thin as breath, threading through the silence.
Sara looked down and saw a section of the floorboards marked by a shape that matched the one in the drawing exactly.
Before either of them could speak, the strange light burst through the crack with a cold, unnatural glow.
