In the Old Forest, Luna the owl and her friends notice the moonlight fading from their clearing. When they follow the clues to Whispering Spring, they find something watching them from the water.
In the heart of the Old Forest, where the branches creaked softly even on still nights, lived an owl named Luna. She was the youngest in a busy nest full of older, noisier owls, and she was tired of being told to stay close and be careful. Luna wanted one true adventure of her own.
Every night she perched on her favourite branch and watched the forest breathe below her. She noticed everything: a beetle crossing a root, a mouse slipping through ferns, a fox’s tail vanishing behind a thorn bush. Nothing escaped her amber eyes.
Then, one night, the moon slid behind a thick bank of clouds, and the forest seemed to lose its shine all at once. The silver light that usually spilled over the clearing was gone. Shadows gathered between the trees. The hedgehogs no longer shuffled home quietly. The squirrels stopped chattering. Even the old oaks seemed to lean closer, listening.
Luna swooped down to meet her best friend, Felix the hedgehog, beneath a broad oak. He was already waiting there, his nose lifted and twitching nervously.
"Luna," he whispered, "look at the clearing. Something’s wrong."
He was right. The place where they played in the moonlight was buried in darkness, except for one odd thing: a smooth stone in the middle of the grass, glowing faintly as if it had just been dropped there.
Before Luna could touch it, another shape rustled through the leaves. Mila the squirrel skidded to a stop beside them, a folded map tucked under her arm and worry sharp in her eyes.
"I heard it happened near the Whispering Spring too," she said. "The light there vanished first."
Luna stared at the glowing stone, then toward the black line of trees beyond the clearing. The air felt different now, as if the forest itself was holding its breath.
"Then that’s where we go," she said.
The three friends slipped between the roots and into the dark path leading deeper into the Old Forest. The glow from the stone faded behind them, but ahead, somewhere beyond the ferns and branches, something pale stirred near the Whispering Spring.
And then two bright, unfamiliar eyes opened in the water and fixed themselves on Luna.
