In a world where time bends and shadows watch, Lena and Victor uncover a key that may unlock the hidden Clock of Darkness beneath the Shadow Academy.
Fog skimmed the cobbled courtyard of the Shadow Academy, and moonlight sharpened its towers into dark, crooked spires. Lena waited with her back against the freezing stone wall, every sound magnified in the stillness, until Victor stepped out of the shadows and crossed to her in silence.
In his palm lay a small object wrapped in velvet. He opened it just enough for the light to catch the metal key inside, its surface etched with an hourglass symbol.
Lena’s breath caught. Strange things had been happening for weeks. Shadows had shifted behind classroom windows when no one was there to cast them. The tower clock had struck the hour only when nobody was looking. Even the underground passages, sealed and forgotten for years, seemed to press against her thoughts whenever she passed the astronomy room.
"You found it near the old well?" she whispered.
Victor nodded. "No one else saw me."
Lena took the key. It was colder than winter water, as if it had been buried for centuries.
"Then it’s real," she said. "The door under the astronomy room."
Victor glanced toward the academy windows. "And if the rumours are true?"
"Then the Clock of Darkness is down there." She said the words carefully, as though naming it might make it wake.
They did not speak again as they crossed the empty corridor and descended the spiral staircase. Torchlight trembled over the walls, catching old carvings, cracked stone, and places where the mortar had been replaced long ago by something darker. At the bottom, they found the iron door exactly where the legends promised it would be. An hourglass shape was cut into the lock.
Lena fitted the key into place and turned it.
The door gave a low, rusty groan and swung inward.
Beyond it waited a narrow corridor lined with black stone, so still it felt sealed away from the rest of the world. Even the air was wrong there, thick and cold, as if time itself had gathered and stopped to listen. Somewhere ahead, a clock ticked once.
Then again.
A pale light flashed at the far end of the corridor, and a figure in a black cloak stepped into view. The hood hid the face completely. Lena and Victor froze. The ticking surged faster and faster, like a heart suddenly alarmed, and from deep inside the darkness came the sound of something ancient beginning to turn....
