The Whispering Circus and the Mirror of Secrets

Seventeen-year-old Lena, sceptical and restless, stays behind after a strange circus act and meets Victor. A suspended mirror and a vanished audience member suggest the show is hiding something.

Under the lanterns of the Whispering Circus, Lena told herself she was only there because her friends had dragged her along. The tents glowed against the night like bruised jewels, and the music drifting from the arena sounded too sweet to trust. Her parents would have called it all smoke, rope, and careful timing. Lena almost wanted to believe them.

Almost.

Then the illusionist looked straight at her. Not at the crowd, not at the front row, but at Lena, as if he’d been waiting for her all evening. She felt the glance like a hand on the back of her neck. Above the ring hung a tall mirror in a silver frame, tilted slightly off centre. When she looked into it, she saw her own face and, for one unsettling second, something behind her that wasn’t there when she turned around.

Most of the audience had already gone by the time Lena edged closer to the ring. The air smelled of dust, wax, and something cold beneath it. Then a voice came from beside her. "Did you see it too?" A boy stood in the half-dark, a little older than she was, with dark eyes and gloves pulled tight over his hands. "The mirror," Lena said. He nodded once. "I’m Victor. I didn’t come here for the show. People disappear after this act." Before Lena could answer, the lights died.

A sharp metallic crash rang out backstage. The mirror flared with a pale, wrong light, and Lena’s reflection smiled before she did. Victor grabbed her arm. Across the arena, the illusionist stepped out of the darkness and bowed, as if this were the moment he had been waiting for. "If you want to leave," he said softly, "don’t look into the mirror." The frame behind him shivered, and something on the other side moved closer.
