Three friends slip into an abandoned factory and find a diary whose words shift with their feelings, until the building itself seems to wake and whisper back.
On a frosty evening, when fog blurred the streets of Harmonia into pale smudges of light, Lena, Bartek, and Iga met beneath a lone lamppost near the old factory at the edge of town. Its broken windows stared out into the dark like empty eyes. Most people crossed to the other side of the street without looking at it. The three of them had spent weeks pretending they were not curious.
Tonight, curiosity won.
Inside, the air smelled of dust, cold metal, and something faintly sour, as if the building had been holding its breath for years. Their footsteps creaked across the floor and came back at them from every direction. Lena shone her torch ahead, jaw set, while Bartek stayed close behind her and Iga kept glancing over her shoulder, half expecting the dark to move.
Then Lena stopped.
A thick book lay on the floorboards, its cover grey with dust and its corners worn soft, as if hands had turned its pages again and again. She picked it up carefully. It was a diary.
When they opened it, the torchlight fell across a line written in sharp, uneven ink: My secrets change with your emotions.
Iga read it aloud, and the words seemed to settle in the air between them. Her skin prickled. For one strange second, she was certain the sentence had looked different before she spoke.
Bartek frowned and flipped to the next page. The torch light shook in his hand. A new line stood there now, but Lena had not seen anyone write it: Loneliness grows when the lights go out.
He swallowed. "Was that there a second ago?"
Before anyone could answer, another sound slid through the factory - soft, crackling, almost like someone whispering from behind a wall. Lena turned sharply. The torch flickered once, twice, and died.
Darkness dropped over them.
The diary fell open at their feet. In the blackness, its pages began to glow, faint at first, then red as embers. Lena bent down, holding her breath, and saw the words shifting across the paper as if they were being written by an unseen hand.
Then the whisper came again, closer this time, and the shadows around them began to gather into shapes that were almost human.
