In the mist-bound city of Iralis, Mira finds a book that can reshape reality, but only until dawn, when the rules of magic change again.
Mira brushed a fall of dust from the vault floor with her fingertips and listened to the silence answer back. Hours had passed in the library at the heart of Iralis, and the city beyond its walls was sinking into mist, its lanterns already blurred into halos. Here, among stone arches and shelves that climbed into shadow, the light never stayed honest for long.
The lamps mounted along the corridors drifted on their brackets as if they had their own private will, throwing long, distorted shapes across the walls. Mira had grown up among those shifting shadows, but she still felt the pull of the library like a hand at her throat. Her teachers called magic a discipline of measured outcomes and careful prediction. Mira suspected they said that because they had never found anything truly dangerous.
She moved between the shelves in search of a treatise on the transformations of light, tracing the spines with absent fingers until something cold and rough caught beneath her palm. The book came free too easily. Its binding was matte black, unmarked, and wrong in a way she could not name. The instant she lifted it, a pulse shivered through it, faint as a heartbeat.
Mira hesitated only a moment before opening it.
There was no text on the first page. The paper darkened, then filled with a deep blue glow that seemed to come from below the surface, as if the page had become a night sky seen through water. Lines began to write themselves across it, sketching a map of Iralis, but the streets shifted while she looked, twisting into forms she had never seen laid over the city before.
Then words surfaced, one by one, sharp as a whisper in her ear: He who reads changes the world. Before the sun rises, you may choose once.
Mira's breath caught. She read the line again, and the air around her seemed to tighten, as though the library itself had leaned closer.
From somewhere deep between the stacks came a soft murmur.
Mira lifted her head. A shadow was moving beyond the bookshelves, tall enough to scrape the edge of the lamplight, human in shape but stretched into something impossible. She closed her hand around the book, feeling its pulse answer her grip, and waited for the figure to step into view.
