Susie and the Door to the Clouds

Susie finds a tiny door in her garden and steps into a secret world high among the clouds.

Susie loved racing around her garden and pretending she was an explorer. One bright afternoon, she followed a yellow butterfly past the currant bush and stopped so suddenly that her breath caught in her throat.

Hidden in the leaves was a tiny door. It was painted in soft colours and shone like it had just been polished. A silver key hung from the handle, swaying gently as if someone had touched it only moments before.

Susie reached out, turned the key, and pushed the door open.

On the other side was not the garden at all. There were clouds everywhere, piled high like snowy hills. Rainbow bridges arched through the sky. Tiny flying kittens with white wings zipped past her ears, and a smiling dragon drifted by as lightly as a kite.

Susie stepped onto the nearest cloud. It felt soft and bouncy under her feet, and at once she began to float higher. A heron in a neat little hat waved from far away. Susie stared, wide-eyed, as the cloud path twisted deeper into the bright, strange sky.

Then the air went still.

A shadow moved across the clouds, slow and dark. Susie turned around, and a whisper brushed her ear: "Do you dare to go further?"
