Susie and the Door to Cloudland

Susie discovers a tiny door in the attic and steps into a strange world above the clouds, where a cloud-eared dog named Puffer greets her and mysterious lights suddenly appear.

One afternoon, Susie climbed the creaky stairs to the old attic. She liked exploring there, because the attic always seemed to hide one more surprise. But this time, something new caught her eye: a tiny shiny door tucked behind a toy chest.

Susie knelt down and stared at it. The door was no bigger than a book. Its silver handle felt cool in her hand. She pulled it open a little, and a soft breeze slipped out, smelling like rain and sky. Susie took one careful step, then another, and crossed the threshold.

At once, everything changed. Puffy white clouds floated all around her. Beneath her shoes was soft blue grass, springy as a cushion. Right beside her sat a little dog with ears like clouds and bright, curious eyes.

"Hi, I’m Puffer!" he barked.

Susie blinked. She was standing in Cloudland.

Then the sky flashed with tiny coloured lights. Far away, something made a strange humming sound. Puffer’s ears twitched. Susie looked toward the glow, and the clouds seemed to part as if they were making room for something hidden. "What is that?" she whispered, and she and Puffer started toward the shining light.
